Suma-dera Temple is known for its association with the Genpei period in the late 12th century, when Japanese politics was dominated by the Taira and Minamoto clans.
Suma-dera Temple contains many valuable items.
The wooden eleven-faced Kannon statue was made between 1336 and 1392 during the Nanbokucho period. Above the statue are eleven faces, including three faces of the Bodhisattva, an angry face, a laughing face, and the transformed face of Amitabha Buddha.
According to temple records, the altar for enshrining this Buddha resembles a small palace and was built in 1368.
In the center of the image is Fugen Bodhisattva riding a white elephant with six tusks. Surrounded by other gods, Jura Xueru wears a twelve-layered ceremonial kimono. It is depicted riding on a purple cloud to protect those who receive the Lotus Sutra.
