Hyogo Ward Modernization Heritage

Overview

Hyogo Ward, Kobe City has a long and prosperous history as a trading hub.
There are many historical sites that testify to Hyogo's modernization, such as river tunnels, public water facilities, and places where Hyogo's merchants gathered to conduct business.

Minatogawa Tunnel

The tunnel was completed in August 1901. It was the first river tunnel in Japan, and at the time was one of the largest in the world.

Tachigahata Dam

Tategahata Dam was completed in 1905 to control the Karasuhara water source for the water supply system.
It is the fourth oldest concrete gravity dam in Japan.

Okagata Club

Hyogo Prefecture was once divided into three administrative districts: Okagata, Minamihama, and Kitahama.
Okata Club was built in 1927 by Hyogo merchants as a social gathering place. It was designed by Kichisaburo Takamatsu and built by Hisakichi Harada.
